The post-election question at breakfast today was “do we still fly the U.S. flag on Hoop Doet Leven next summer?”
No answer yet. What a tragedy.

We Canadians are horrified and just staring blankly at the TV and pinching ourselves,
and extend a neighborly arm around your collective shoulders saying, “we still think our American friends are great, eh?”
Why on earth not. Are you somehow embarrassed/ashamed that the good folk of the US of A have shown how they really feel about the establishment and the ‘Clinton’ mafia? After ‘Brexet’ we expect exciting times with a chance to re-think ideas without being glued in the past ~ be proud to be Americans ~ you will always be ‘great’.
I’m thinking the Canadian flag is lovely… ha!
😦
We never thought you would replace a black man with an orange one!! We’re sorry too.

Bon courage chers amis,
Isabelle
Still in shock.
Yes please carry on flying your beautiful flag. We had a similar dilemma when the uk voted to leave the EU. We worried about how other Europeans would behave towards us. Would we face hostility, anger, get the cold shoulder? What we found was that we got sympathy, commiserations & even envy from a few people. I’m sure that you will get a similar reaction but maybe not envy!
Not my first choice either but joining Colin Kaepernecke is not my idea of being an American. Hope you’ll still be a proud American in your travels.
I will fly the national ensign wrapped in black cloth for the next 4 years.

We know the feeling. We had enough trouble explaining George W. Bush to the French, I don’t know how you’re going to explain Trump! It is an embarrassment.
Fly that flag! Don’t let the worst among us define what our flag stands for. Fly it for the inclusionary voters, the positive, the generous-spirited, the open-hearted, the truth-speaking. Definitely fly that flag. (And maybe you’ll have a smaller one made—an owner’s pennant, “Don’t blame us; we’re from Massachusetts.”)
Please Fly your Flag…. it’s been a beacon of hope of decency for many who have lived under regimes around the world…. Praise to countries that can change governments every four years without bloodshed or violence…. maybe a lot of name calling …. but after a few day get up and on with it….. You have a lot to admire ….. now get to work on the education system…..
You are wonderful ambassadors for your country, full of wonderful people. Your association with the flag can’t but help reminde those worried about Trump that it is an inclusive and principled country none-the-less.
Excellent entertaining posts. As also a frequent visitor to France,I know exactly what you mean.
It is the nation’s flag. The flag of all the people of the United States. So, yes, fly it still. (But black crepe would’t be a bad idea.)
While I am limited to a spring and fall week on le Boat, for security reasons only fly the flag while cruising on the canal. While moored in towns the flag comes down.
Hi thhanks for posting this
